Ethosia is a micronation located in Midwestern North America. It is one of many micronations located in the region and has no available data to determine its rank in size or population. The nation borders are split and is enclaved by the US states of Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. Ethosia has access to a port in Arkansas that connects to the St. Francis River. The official language of Ethosia is English.

Before statehood, Ethosia was occupied by multiple tribal-esque groups between 2010 and 2017, such as the Keetowah, Marauders, and the Jedaks. Since 2018 Jedaks have been entirely routed out of the lands Ethosia currently occupies as the Marauders and Keetowah tribes united against the group. Most local Ethosians can trace their connection to native Marauder and Keetowah groups that were prominent in the region. In the late 2010s the two groups attempted to form an Ethosian state before the Keetowah tribes collapsed and dispersed, never again regaining their stance or reputation.

Ethosia gained its longest running sense of independence in 2021 after being occupied by the United Socialist States of America and the Principality of Caudonia for nearly 3 years. Since then, Ethosia has had a sole leader with a democratically elected Parliament and Cabinet of Ministers. Since 2022 Ethosia has declared its full support for Ukraine as well as fought a conflict with Nicaea (formerly Cimbrun) in which the nation lost control of its only port province which would ultimately be returned in 2023 through the diplomatic efforts of President Gabriel Sebastian to peacefully reunite the Ethosian Ozark territories. Ethosia has also lead the formation of the Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Organization (EACO) alongside Libertalia, Vinland, and most recently The Sohnland.

Ethosia is a unitary state with a unique system of Hastonian Democracy. A developing country, it is the largest state in the Ozark Sector, but one of the poorest as Ethosia struggles to tackle local development and foreign investment. Ethosia has since formed the EACO in order to cooperate with other micronations in its region to cooperatively develop itself and its allies.

Etymology

The name "Ethosia" derives from the the word 'Ethos' as defined as the characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as manifested in its beliefs and aspirations. 'Sia' comes from the Greek suffix that means 'state of' so therefore; the State of Ethos.

History

Early History

Settlement of modern Ethosian territories is dated back as near as 2010, when the first three tribes would come in to contact with one another. For 7 years the Marauders, Keetowah, and Jedaks fought an all out war between the three for control of the fertile and hill lands of the St. Francois Mountains. Little is known about the three tribes beyond the outcome being total dominance over the clans by the Marauders, a tribal group whose morals were indiscernible from their ferocious actions and conduct in the battlefield. What little is known is that Marauders descended from local German and Eastern European cultures while the Keetowah descended directly from the Cherokee Nation, Jedaks were believed to have descended from the Irish and Scottish Highlands.

The First State

The first state, Victoriam, or the Kingdom of Victoriam, was the first claim to nationhood of the original Ethosian tribes. Victoriam was a radical and unstable nation. It was represented by a council of tribal representatives and the King, which was never crowned due to disagreement of which tribe should dominate to political sphere. Petty disagreements such as these would lead to Victoriam remaining stagnant and in constant civil strife, even facing a Communist revolt in December of 2018 that would ultimately find the nation being absorbed by the United Socialist States of America in January 2019.

Foreign Domination

In 2019, in the aftermath of the socialist revolt in Victoriam, the state would be absorbed by the United Socialist States of America (USSA). The USSA was a socialist union based in the Burlington SFR and ran by Ronnie Miller. Miller's policies would destroy any hopes of early development in Victoriam and would impede on any local sense of autonomy that was promised by the USSA constitution. For 4 consecutive months, the USSA would occupy and control the activities and developments of the Vicish state. In April of 2019, the Vicish and neighboring Valmorian Autonomous Republics would declare their independence from the USSA on April 24, 2019.

In May 2019, the second state, Haston, would be formed between Valmore and Victoriam in order to foster a better age of development and recovery from the months under USSA repression. The Haston Republic is widely regarded as one of the most successful states in Ethosian early history, however due to the rise of far-right politics and tensions between the Millerists and Blackshirts, Haston would ultimately find itself entirely split in the same way the USSA collapsed. This would lead to the complete annexation of Haston by the Principality of Caudonian by request of then President Hamilton Kennedy in an attempt to preserve the populace and stability of the region. Following the Caudonian annexation in December of 2019, President Hamilton would disappear, never to be seen again. This would allow room for now Ethosian President Gabriel Sebastian, first War Chief of the Marauders, to rapidly gain political control and reputation over the Ethosian state.

Between its annexation in December 2019 to its independence in June of 2021, Ethosia would find itself embroiled in constant ethnic revolts and unstable local governments, leading the Caudonian government to remove its autonomous status in order to attempt to stabilize the region. Despite the efforts of the Caudonian government, Ethosia would eventually request and be granted its independence on June 7, 2021.

Geography

Ethosia is predominantly located within the Wabash Valley of the Rust Belt. The Wabash Valley is a region located in sections of both Illinois and Indiana. It is named for the Wabash River and, as the name is typically used, spans the middle to the middle-lower portion of the river's valley and is centered at Terre Haute, Indiana. The term Wabash Valley is frequently used in local media in Clinton, Lafayette, Mount Carmel, Princeton, Terre Haute, and Vincennes all of which are either on or near the Lower Wabash River.

Climate

In Ethosia, the summers are long, warm, humid, and wet; the winters are freezing, snowy, and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 20°F to 84°F and is rarely below 2°F or above 92°F. This allows for the mass cultivation of 'food crops' such as lettuce, corn, tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes.

Biodiversity

Apart from its historic significance, the Wabash is also "a treasure-chest of rare and endangered species, and serves as the habitat for a wide diversity of plant and animal life".[1] In addition to these species, the river is home to 150 species of fish, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, sauger, rock bass, catfish, and paddlefish – the oldest surviving animal species in North America. Forests and wetlands along the Wabash River harbor many native species, including osprey, bald eagles, bobcats, river otters, and the Indiana bat.

Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone (Dead Zone)

Approaching Ecological Disaster

Currently the Wabash valley faces many issues due to the increased draining and development of lands around the 500 miles long Wabash River. The Wabash River provides up to 72% of Ethosia's drinking water, and by extension, the US State of Indiana. Sediments and pollutants from agricultural fields and urban areas have contributed to the Gulf of Mexico’shypoxic zone,” and has severely affected the Gulf’s fisheries and wildlife. The Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone was first documented in 1972 and is one of the largest of the 400 hypoxic zones around the globe. Due to the increase of pollution in Wabash the river has seen the disappearance or extinction of 7 fish species and 18 mussel species that were once native to the river are no longer found there. Currently the Ethosian government is working with local groups in an effort to clean up the Wabash Valley and to lobby for better efforts to preserve the natural environment of the Valley.
