The Republic of Aksana (Catalan: República d’Aksana), or simply Aksana is a micronation located on the Antarctic Peninsula. Aksana was established on August 25, 2022, but the first micronation to claim it dates to December 21, 2006 with the Confederation of the Antarctica's Elain of Atilnia. Aksana functions similarly to the Grand Duchy of Westarctica or the Grand Duchy of Flandrensis as all three are based in the Antarctic continent.

History

Aksana was founded on August 25, 2022, by a Rhode Islander which until November 27, 2022, Aksana would remain inactive mostly. After November 27, 2022, Aksana started developing a government making its own constitution, bill of rights, and rules. On March 20, 2023, Aksana made its Catalan act which wouldn't start major changes until July 2023. The Catalan act made Aksana a Catalan micronation, but at the time of the act's starting only had minor affects to the republic that would make the republic what it is currently.

Later on in the year on May 24, 2023, Aksana started informal relations with the Republic of Molossia after the republic emailed Molossia. Aksana was ran mostly on MicroWiki until June 13, 2023, which then Aksana focused on developing its presence in the world and expanding its own website which is hosted on Google Sites. Aksana wanted to improve its website, after the failure in design and progress made on its old website, after having to abandon it.

Between August 5, 2023, and August 24, 2023, the Aksanin president visited Barcelona, Catalonia and Valencian Community city of Valencia. While the president was in Catalonia, Aksana recognized two Catalan micronations Todia and South Bages independence and Basque independence after the Minister of Internal Affairs revealed she supported Basque independence sending that information to the Aksanin president on August 9, 2023. Aksana loosened up its foreign relations policies for other micronations after these events, but policies planned to be dropped soon. Following that, on August 27, 2023, Aksana had released Article 49 which modified the constitution making Aksana a unitary government with Autonomous communities similar to Spain, and disbanding of the states. On August 30, 2023, Aksana had its senate renamed to the parliament of Aksana and gave the parliament its own logo different from the normal governmental logos of Aksana such as the community Generalitats logo, which is now only used by the communities alone, and not together in the parliament. On March 19, 2023, the Republic of Aksana dropped its proposal ISO code of AK, and replaced it with the code NN, as the code AK can also be confused for the definition AK for AK-47, a type of gun, while NN cannot be confused as easily.

Pre & Post-Founding of the Terrassa Union

On March 10, 2024, Aksana was given the Autonomous State of Novaskye from another nation, and rebranding it to become the Free State of Skyelin-Foix, which later resulted on the forming of a new territorial governing body on March 11, 2024. The Republic of Aksana founded the Free Commonwealth of Terrassa, a union for states outside of the Antarctic continent still united as if they were directly under the republic. At its founding, it founded with five territories under it, two of which are autonomous, and the other three under direct rule.

The Republic of Aksana and the Republic of Todia formed the International Organisation of the Catalanfonia with the intent of cooperation and mutual assistance between Catalan micronationalists.

Government & Politics

Government

The Government of Aksana (Catalan: Govern d'Aksana) is composed of fourteen positions, which only four of the government positions are currently filled. In addition to the fourteen seats, there is nineteen senate seats, which all senate seats are currently empty. The most two powerful people in the Republic of Aksana are the President Grant Taylor and the Minister of Internal Affairs Ireneta Alonso. The government is spread out over the world, with an embassy in the United States, United Kingdom, and Catalonia. A macronational embassy for the Republic of Aksana is a base of operations of a government person, but there is only one embassy per country. Despite the president of the Republic being in the U.S. State of Rhode Island, the governmental administrative center is in Terrassa, Catalonia, outside of the United States.

Constitution

Aksana's constitution was designed similarly to the US Constitution, and has diversified to a unitary government and to include for Aksana's lack of government issue. The Constitution of Aksana has five pages, formerly three pages, which the constitution includes the Terrassa Union, government positions, and information about the republic.

Aksana has a primary Catalan culture, with smaller sub-cultures around it. The gender makeup of the nation is female oriented, with 67% reporting their gender as female, 41.7% (42%) of which is born female, the other 25% transgender. Another 25% report being male, and the remaining 8% being other. The Republic of Aksana shows deep pride in Catalan Nationalism, and most Aksanin's recognize Catalan independence.

Aksana unlike most other micronations does not center around a discord server, as the republic does not have a server, most of its actions are done through twitter on the @gov_aks account. Aksana used to be an interventionist nation, involving itself in other micronations despite claiming neutrality to try to help other micronations become more mature and be more stable, but with the frequent rise of instability in micronations, Aksana has since held its title of neutrality and no longer intervenes in other micronations politics.

Aksanaball & Hetalia

Like Cycoldiaball, the republic has its own countryball which is commonly displayed as a female. Aksanaball on April 24, 2023 was officially recognized by the Polandball Wiki and made her own appearance with her own article in the wiki. Although Aksana appears in countryballs, which can be easily used to represent the republic if used properly, Aksana never made any form of appearance with fan art or at all in Hetalia related works.

Claims

Aksana is located in the Antarctic Peninsula divided into twenty-one regions, and 3 autonomous communities. Aksana claims the majority of the Antarctic Peninsula with 343,795.03 km² area of land claimed, including antarctic ice sheets. Aksana also claims the South Shetland Islands and the South Orkney Islands. Aksana has claimed its current land since August 25, 2022 not changing its borders, it has only added more unincorporated territories since its founding. Aksana made its first expansion on February 18, 2023, and the final being on March 6, 2023. Most of Aksana's claims can be notable for their high peaks or islands such as Adelaide Island, and other small unnamed islands. From simulations, simulations show that when the ice caps melt, most of Aksana's land will still exist because of its high peaks.

To the Antarctic Treaty System, the Republic of Aksana, Flandrensis, and Westarctica should all not exist, as according to the Antarctic Treaty: "No acts or activities taking place while the present Treaty is in force shall constitute a basis for asserting, supporting or denying a claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica or create any rights of sovereignty in Antarctica. No new claim, or enlargement of an existing claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica shall be asserted while the present Treaty is in force."
